Community Supported Agriculture (aka CSA) helps eliminate some of the uncertainty of farming. When customers commit in advance to purchasing a CSA share, farmers are able to plan their crops with confidence. CSAs are critical to keeping a farm in business. At Olivette Farm, we started a program called “Sharing” is Caring. This program that allows the purchase of a CSA share to be donated, which eliminates some uncertainty for local struggling families. These donations will guarantee 20 weeks of fresh organic produce per family. We linked up with Haywood Street Respite to help us get this fresh to families in need.
At conception, the program seemed like a good idea. However, immediately after its launch, the success and participation in this program was outstanding. Within 2 weeks, 16 shares have already been donated. Here are a couple stories from Haywood Street Respite of who is going to benefit from this generosity:
“A working single mom with two growing children ages 12 and 5 living in downtown Asheville. The family has been an essential part of the life of Haywood Street Congregation, specifically the clothing ministry where she helped run a closet that supported over 300 people each week.”
“A newly housed cancer patient with a love and desire to incorporate more naturopathic healing into his life. He loves to share healing recipes and strategies with many friends at Haywood Street and loves to glean from an organic garden. His box will not only be enjoyed by him but the abundance will likely be shared with his neighbors in the Shiloh neighborhood of Asheville.”
