An Olivette Farm update from farmer Joe Evans…
The Olivette Farm 2020 CSA sign-up has begun!
We’re excited to expand production into some new fields this year! Adding more acreage into the mix will allow us to rotate crops better, cover crop more intensively, and increase our overall production of crops for markets, restaurants, and of course expand our beloved CSA community.
Greenhouse seeding has begun. We start the vast majority of the crops we grow from seed in our propagation greenhouse. These starts are then later transplanted out into the field where they grow to maturity. Onions always kick things off each season as they need 8-10 weeks to reach a field-ready stage for transplanting. This year we are growing a lot more storage onions because every meal starts with an onion.
We are now taking on CSA members for the 2020 season. Pledging your support for the farm during the “off” season allows us to procure necessary supplies-potting soil, fertilizer, flats, seeds, and equipment while putting a crop plan in place for the year. It is not only an investment in the farm’s future harvests but a testament to your values in the viability of sustainable agriculture. Your commitment to the farm extends beyond the crops in the field. It is our hope to cultivate a community of folks that are fed in more ways than just-food. In many ways, organic agriculture is about closing loops, not only in regards to production but in consumer connections. ASAP (Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project) is hosting the Asheville CSA Fair at New Belgium Brewery on March 12th from 3-6pm. We will be set up and answering questions about our CSA program. Last year this event put our membership at capacity. So don’t sleep on signing up! ~by Joe Evans
